POLAR - JAPANESE ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1910-1912

TADA (KEIICHI) Nankyoku Tanken Shiroku, 8 photographic plates, one colour plate after a watercolour by Tada, numerous illustrations in the text, 10 pages of advertisements at end, some toning, publisher's pictorial wrappers (with penguin design on upper cover), spotting, spine rubbed [cf. Ross 1.2.1., minor variations of collation], 8vo, Tokyo, Maekdawa Bunoeikaku, 1912

Footnotes

Keiichi Tada acted as secretary in the first year, and assistant naturalist in the second year of the Shirase-led Expedition to the Antarctic. He wrote two books immediately after the return of the Expedition, "both considered unauthorised primary accounts... [he] is said to have jumped ship upon the return to Japan in order to rush his accounts of the expedition to the press. He had apparently been working on his narratives during the ship's return" (Ross).
