COLLINS (GREENVILLE)

[Cartes et plans de côtes d'Angleterre, d'Ecosse et d'Irlande, copiées sur celles du Pilote côtier de la Grande-Bretagn de Greenville-Collins], letterpress title with list of contents, 19 engraved charts (of which 18 double-page), contemporary French red morocco gilt, sides decorated with roll-tooled floral borders and drawer-handle tools, the arms of Neuville in the centre, spine tooled in 8 compartments within raised bands, g.e., folio (479 x 362mm.), Paris, N. Bellin, 1757

Footnotes

BOUND IN A FINE FRENCH ROCOCO BINDING, WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. This French edition of Collins' highly regarded coastal charts was published by the hydrographer to the French king, Jacques Nicolas Bellin, presumably with the intention of assisting with France's planned invasion of Great Britain during the Seven Years War.

Provenance: Neuville family, of Normandy, with arms on the sides. Possibly those of Philippe de Neuville (d.1781), Minster of the Marine, or Jean Nicolas Buache de Neuville (1741-1825), who in 1782 replaced d'Anville as Premier Géographe du Roi, and then in 1794 was appointed by Napoleon as Chef du Dépôt de la Marine; Anatole Delorme, inscription; Pierre Berès, book label inside upper cover.
