BEATO (FELICE)
Two views of Amritsar, showing the pool, and entrance pavilion of the Golden Temple, albumen prints, a few short marginal tears, images approximately 270 x 325mm., c.1858-59
Footnotes
After documenting the aftermath of the Siege of Lucknow, Beato travelled to Amritsar. He took some of the first photographs of the Golden Temple complex. It appears that Beato did not produce many prints of his Amritsar series as he probably thought they would be less commercial than those taken in the wake of the 1857 uprising. The present images formed the wings of a triptych centred on the Golden Temple.
