T.H. Somervell (1890-1975) was a distinguished mountaineer, selected for both the 1922 and 1924 Everest Expeditions, and making extended excursions around the Kangchenjunga massif, and northern India in the 1920 and 30s. In later life he was Vice-President of the Himalayan Club (1942-43), and President of the Alpine Club (1962-65). See Somervell, Some Minor Expeditions in the Himalaya, published in Himalayan Journal, vol. 13, 1946, in which he describes many of the scenes depictednin these photographs.
