Footnotes
Constructing personal landscapes out of found objects, Louise Nevelson is recognized as a preeminent sculptor of the twentieth century. Known for her intricate monochrome wooden sculptures, Nevelson's sculptural practice lies in tandem with Abstract Expressionism and Cubism yet is unequivocally her own. In addition to her use of wood, Nevelson brilliantly engaged with materials such as bronze, steel and aluminum, amongst others. The form and material of the present lot is self-assured and resolute yet abundant in meaning and visual impact, in turn challenging conventional ideas of sculpture and of beauty. The present lot demonstrates Nevelson's command of bronze to consider the relationship between objects and the space they occupy in order to cultivate a transcendent experience.
Championed by many institutions, works by Louise Nevelson are included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York and more. Since 1967, Nevelson has had six solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art and countless others at revered institutions.
