Sadly, when only seven years old, Lionel Edwards' father died, but not before he had instilled in his young son a love for riding and hunting. After studying art under portraitist Sir Arthur Cope, and latterly at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and Frank Calderon's School of Animal Painting, Edwards spent his career bringing together his two great loves of painting and country pursuits.
Like his contemporaries, Cecil Aldin and Sir Alfred Munnings, during the First World War, Edwards volunteered as a Remount Purchasing Officer. This was the body responsible for the purchase and training of horses and mules for use in the war effort.
He was a prolific artist, working in oils and watercolours, but also working as an illustrator, providing illustrations for numerous books and publications, including Country Life, The Sphere and The Graphic.
