Exhibited
London, Royal Academy, 1858, no. 283.

The frame bears the inscription (some of which can also be read on the remnants of a label attached to the reverse):

'Bonnie Tibbie Inglis, through sun and stormy weather,
She kept upon the broomy hills her father's flock together.
She was sitting 'mongst the crags, wild and moss'd, and hoary,
Reading from an ancient book some old martyr story.'
