十八世紀 黃花梨長方卷軸盒
Intricately carved with elaborate designs of chilong and yi, the present box was likely produced for use by a high-ranking member of the Qing Court or scholar-official elite. Scroll boxes bearing a similar form as the present example were favoured by the Qianlong emperor to preserve his own poems and essays.
Compare with a related zitan scroll box, 18th century, illustrated in Qing Legacies: The Sumptuous Art of Imperial Packaging, Macau, 2000, no.4. See also a related carved cinnabar lacquer box decorated with dragons, Qianlong, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Ibid., no.14. Compare with a related pair of zitan scroll boxes, Qianlong, which were sold at Christie's New York, 16 September 1998, lot 231.
