The theme of a boy riding a hobby horse comprises part of the popular 'boys at play' scene, which is a symbol of the eager wish for the education and advancement of many sons in Confucian China, further emphasised by the hobby horse he rides (mashang) which is a pun for 'immediately' or 'soon'.
