The verse inscribed on the reserve is from Ji Kang's (223-262) Qinfu (Ode to the Qin), which could be translated as:
Black clouds shade on the peak,
Phoenixes hover over the top,
The pure dew moistens the skin,
And the soft breeze flows between valleys.
Compare with a Confucius-style 'Tianfeng huanpei' qin commissioned by Price House of Yi, Ming Dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, which is illustrated by M.Z. Zheng in the Guqin in the Collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, 2010, pl.10.
