Pour surmonter son deuil de Raymond Radiguet, mort en décembre 1923, Jean Cocteau s'isole dans un petit hôtel à Villefranche sur Mer, où sa table de travail fait face à un miroir. Cela lui donnera l'inspiration de ces 31 autoportraits.
Sans doute le plus beau et un des livres les plus personnels de Jean Cocteau.
