Écrit en 1946, le roman Querelle de Brest présente les actions dépravées du séduisant marin bisexuel, voleur, traître, trafiquant de drogue et meurtrier Georges (Jo) Querelle dans la ville portuaire de Brest.
Cette première édition a été publiée clandestinement par Paul Morihien en 525 exemplaires dont celui-ci est l'un des quarante exemplaires signés et numérotés par Genet "Pour les amis de Querelle".
Avec ses illustrations homo-érotiques explicites de Cocteau, le livre a été poursuivi pour atteinte aux bonnes mœurs en 1954, mais a ensuite été innocenté pour des raisons de procédure (Indiana University, site web "Banned Books").
