Footnotes

爪哇 印度尼西亞 約九世紀 釋迦牟尼銀像

Depicting the Buddha with a tranquil, downcast gaze and a relaxed gait, this silver miniature evokes an arresting quietude. Standing on a crisp, double-lotus base, Shakyamuni holds both of his finely modelled hands in the gesture of teaching (vitarka mudra), with the middle finger touching the thumb. The hem of his robe gracefully meanders down his left flank.

The sculpture's pleasing figural volume, small pleated samghati draped over the left shoulder, and looped halo compare with a late 9th-century Buddha Vairocana in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1987.142.23). Also compare a Javanese gold-and-silver figure of the same subject sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 18 October 2005, lot 176.

Private Hong Kong Collection
