The 1930's and 40's could be described as a golden age for Van Cleef & Arpels. The maison debuted some very recognisable collections during this period, which made it a well-reputed jeweller worldwide. Hawaii was one of such collection, in the form of a flower bouquets composed of various precious stones and jewels, it presents the colours of the Liberation in very light, free and vivid design.

The present lot is the brand's high jewel watch in the Hawaii collection. Designed for a custom-order, it is a secret watch of floral design. The petals are set with pure rubellite while the pistil is highlighted by a cluster of brilliant-cut diamonds. There is a secret button at 3 o'clock which can be switched to reveal the dial ingeniously concealed underneath. More masterly, it has a quick switch that allows the wearer to conveniently remove its strap and turn it into a brooch. This sparkling piece does not just function as a timepiece, but also as an elegant, timeless ornament for lady.
