In spite of being introduced during the quartz crisis, the Royal Oak model still became a game changer and created a new category of watchmaking- luxury sports watches. The original Royal Oak was referenced 5402, also known as "Jumbo Royal Oak". It quickly gained popularity and the first 2,000 pieces in A series were sold out very soon. Audemars Piguet then made additional watches in B, C, and D Series. Each of these watches were made with an alphabet and serial numbers on the case back.

Amongst all four series of Royal Oak 5402ST, the B series is far more rare than its peers, only around 1,000 pieces were made. After almost 50 years of its introduction, very few examples of B series in good condition have appeared in the market. The model is therefore highly sought-after amongst collectors. The present watch is part of those watches in B series and is notable for its sharp case. It is very well preserved by the original owner with just a few signs of use over so many years. For those who intend to own an intriguing part of watchmaking history, this is a piece that cannot be missed.
