Joy Adamson is best known for her conservation efforts associated with the lioness Elsa. She wrote of these experiences in her 1960 best-seller Born Free and was later portrayed by Virginia McKenna in the Oscar winning 1966 film of the same name.

From 1945 Adamson began to paint the different Kenyan communities and was subsequently commissioned by the British Government to record the twenty-two most important tribes in Kenya.

She also published 'The Peoples of Kenya' 1975 and most of Adamson's work can be found in the collection of the National Museums of Kenya.
