Provenance
The collection of Daphne, Lady Moore;
Die Kunskamer, Cape Town;
A private collection.
Lady Moore was the wife of Sir Henry Monck-Mason Moore, Governor of Kenyan and an intimate friend of Field Marshall Smuts. A portrait of Lady Moore from 1956 by Stern currently hangs in the collection of the Irma Stern Museum, Cape Town.
In 1961 Stern visited Spain and in 1962 Madeira, she revelled in the recognition she received and was charmed by the country. She wrote to Mona Berman:
"The place is very African in character. Palms grow – dates even ripe – the sea is blue and the sun shines hard.... We live in a very good hotel opposite the harbour - we have (a) sea view (from) two large windows – I have turned the sitting room into a studio."
