Footnotes
Since the 14th century, the city of Tabriz in north west Persia has been a major city of fine rug weaving. The world renowned Master weaver, Hadji Jalili created some of the most elegant examples in the late 19th/early 20th century.
He worked closely with Western agents (for the American market) so that his workshop would produce pieces that complimented the more Western style of interior decoration. The workshops were 'updated' to meet the demands of the Western market and the writer Cecil Edwards said 'the best of the Tabriz carpet factories are the most up-to-date in Persia -clean light, well ventilated and not overcrowded,' when he visited in the early 20th century.
Jalili's workshop was famous for its artistic drawings and the use of understated and restrained colours -as shown in the present lot. These late 19th century carpets epitomized decadence while serving as a neutral foundation for rooms filled with other elaborate furnishings and artwork.
