(一)至(六)畫畫作字,如先賢所曰:形神兼備,造型嚴整,筆墨趣味至雅正高逸之態,方不落古人之窠臼耳。效厂女弟筆墨肅雅,遠在青島,用功勤作,有明之文氏花鳥畫之清遠耳。而在於書法,則可與王羲之〈聖教序〉上取法,因王字世人多愛之,當從此入手,可以相通。大寫意畫則於造型外,文章要多讀,所謂「詩文書畫有真(意),貴能深造求其通」,缶盧有此論。我師白石翁有「書以畫法,意與古通」。今為汝言「書者,流美者,心跡矣」,楊雄至理之「青籐一去有缶盧,傳到齊璜道已疏。昨夜山陰大雪後,依稀夢見醉僧書」以證。書與畫相通之理,弟應從兹入手,方不寐前賢。所謂「大多自然中來」,非為杜撰。古人有洪谷子入太行山,【荊浩】雲臺山,其毅力如此,我弟當如此用功焉。山東歷來孔孟之鄉,多文化,應以人、以文藝傳,不以人傳,望知之。久未習字作畫,而下筆自然天成。蓋以生進入熟,熟而後生,境界使然,非人工臆想耳。齊師有論「刪除臨摹手一雙,老夫寫慣桂林山」,可見與自然之關係。境由心造,筆觀烟雲耶?要知其中之理,逐步提高藝性,非由一時聰明,望慎之。
(七)效厂弟,書法當取法乎上,由王字入手,逐漸深入。四山摩崖,崗山刻石,山東之境内復有鄭文公雲峰山【上、下】之碑,由篆入隸,方整嚴肅之氣,可由畫法之筆入之也,吾昔年入手【李邕】〈雲摩將軍碑〉。
(八)白石師語「筆不掉下即可」,吾以爲把筆沒有定法,非以人工,與天然氣、與造化通。弟當努力,「書因鳥跡方成」,篆撰相通。又文人畫以雅為高度,筆墨亦由提煉而來。蘭竹多練習,以清一代李晴江、鄭板橋為優,逐步而成,與無佛處稱尊耳。
(九)又及八大山人之畫法,烟雲滿紙,筆墨渾成。大空之處,亦是畫境,無畫處,亦是畫也。筆不到而意到可為神品上上也。吾師白石有「我欲九原為走狗,三家(門下)轉輪來」,可見崇敬之。
(十)「氣韻生動」,古賢由此教,然非精勤,那得入室之緣也。高師亦由一般逐漸求之耶。「天材」有之,當努力,否則入於俗套耳。慎之。慎之。
(十一)古人學問無遺力,少壯功夫老始成。紙上得來終覺淺,絕知此事要躬行。古人尚且如此,我輩何以不努力矣。
(十二)至(十三)常寫字,則筆墨不俗,筆墨要雅,無雅正高逸之氣,則入俗耳。慎之。慎之。作字習帖,書畫則逐步進入狀態,而筆法不俗耳。黃庭堅有語「百病可俗,以讀書可醫之」,當不懈也。
(十六)以用筆用墨爲上,在於生動自然耳。禪。
(十七)花用墨要活。點厾要齊整,非亂矣。
(十八)鄭板橋之風竹如此,要有風致,所謂狂士竹。
(十九)晴江老人有此本。
(二十)懶瓚先生有此法。
(二十一)八大山人雪个之畫法意如此。
(二十二)晴江先生有此畫。
(二十四)白石翁畫法亦如此。
(二十五)效厂弟,書畫之道要正,非正大氣象無以致精能廣大之法也。悲鴻先生有下筆即見物象,由此入手,逐漸提高,珍重之。禪墨。

註:是冊乃李苦禪為「效厂女弟」所作課徒稿,兼論書畫之法,共二十五幀。冊中闡述諸多筆墨經驗總結,頗有獨到處:如教導弟子應多讀文章,「取法乎上」,要「精勤」 、「常寫字」,提煉筆墨,方能得「氣韻生動」。又以筆墨親示之,作禽鳥、鯰魚、蘭花、竹子、蘭草、石頭、鮭魚、螃蟹等,示範鄭板橋、八大山人、齊白石等各家大写意笔法,行筆利落爽勁,清奇高逸,寄贈遠在青島的女弟子,殷殷之情,溢於紙端。
