註:吳昌碩晚年與日本友人過從甚密,且由於王一亭、長尾甲等人不遺餘力地推廣,數種缶翁墨蹟在日本出版發行,以及社會上層人士的青睞,晚年的吳昌碩在日本聲譽日隆,日人皆以求得缶翁片紙為榮,旅華的日本人接踵而至外,來自日本本土的訂單亦源源不絕,每每「倍潤以求書畫」。
〈枝藤爛熳〉繪於日式屏風上,屏風為「六曲一隻」,七八株紫藤藤蔓虯曲糾纏,隨觀賞視線鋪展開來,繁茂的花葉間綴枯枝老藤,配三尊頑石,又添蒼老之美感。吳昌碩畫紫藤學徐渭,筆墨淋漓酣暢,而更以「作篆之法」入畫,筆線如龍蛇走,奔放恣意,強調書寫意味。屏風的灑金箋紙光熟,行筆易滑動,不凝墨色,作大幅頗為不易,惟功力深厚如吳昌碩者方可駕馭。若將此屏風完全展開,通幅氣勢如龍;略作折疊,則見紫藤葳蕤,風姿綽約,是亦為屏風畫的獨特之處。
日本居室使用屏風,一可分隔空間,一為裝飾觀賞。此外達官顯貴、文人雅士熱衷的香道、茶會亦多用屏風裝飾,因此屏風畫風格頗為多元,日本人甚至會根據心情和時節變換主題。據稱民國時日本藏家會不惜重金將屏風自東瀛運抵上海,拜請吳昌碩作畫後,再千里迢迢攜返日本。
「梅野先生」如此大費周章地以巨屏相求,所費不貲,必為富於資財的風雅人士,且與吳昌碩往來頻密,這前後數年,得其寫贈甚夥,俱為經心之作。今見吳昌碩屏風畫多出於日本,質精且量稀,可知其非尋常阿堵物可得。
