款識:
塵土有至情,南無觀世音菩薩,風波即大道。鹿叟先生出示貝葉經片屬書,老缶敬題,辛酉(1921)人日,安吉吳昌碩年七十八。

上款:「鹿叟」即白石六三郎(1868-1934),日本長崎人。一九〇〇年於上海開設六三亭,經營有方,成為當時上海最著名的日式飯店,其後又開設了新六三和六三花園兩家飯店。白石六三郎雅好書畫,與吳昌碩、王一亭、哈少甫等書畫家私交甚密,吳昌碩海上首次個展即由白石六三郎籌劃,在六三花園舉辦。

註:「風波即大道,塵土有至情。」是吳昌碩晚年常写赠至交的内容。一九二二年,吳昌碩亦以此語为「崇仰禪宗」的王一亭作對聯,並題「僅以佛祖勸勵警語為座右箴,是可見其玄妙獨到處也。」透露出行將暮年的書家內心的百轉千回,既有歷盡風波之後的篤定,亦有對友朋環繞,享受塵世至情至性的感恩。
白石六三郎是否修佛待考,但日人多受禪宗影響,他自號「鹿叟」,鹿是佛教中正義、善良的化身,又與王一亭等常相過從,故推測他至少應受佛教文化影響頗深。吳昌碩以貝葉硃砂寫佛語,虔敬恭謹,勉勵老友,或許亦是自我心境的寫照。
