吳昌碩　行書佛偈三則　硃砂貝葉經　鏡框　一九二一年作

款識：
塵土有至情，南無觀世音菩薩，風波即大道。鹿叟先生出示貝葉經片屬書，老缶敬題，辛酉（1921）人日，安吉吳昌碩年七十八。

鈐印：吳昌石、吳俊之印（二鈐）

上款：「鹿叟」即白石六三郎（1868-1934），日本長崎人。一九〇〇年於上海開設六三亭，經營有方，成為當時上海最著名的日式飯店，其後又開設了新六三和六三花園兩家飯店。白石六三郎雅好書畫，與吳昌碩、王一亭、哈少甫等書畫家私交甚密，吳昌碩海上首次個展即由白石六三郎籌劃，在六三花園舉辦。

註：「風波即大道，塵土有至情。」是吳昌碩晚年常写赠至交的内容。一九二二年，吳昌碩亦以此語为「崇仰禪宗」的王一亭作對聯，並題「僅以佛祖勸勵警語為座右箴，是可見其玄妙獨到處也。」透露出行將暮年的書家內心的百轉千回，既有歷盡風波之後的篤定，亦有對友朋環繞，享受塵世至情至性的感恩。
白石六三郎是否修佛待考，但日人多受禪宗影響，他自號「鹿叟」，鹿是佛教中正義、善良的化身，又與王一亭等常相過從，故推測他至少應受佛教文化影響頗深。吳昌碩以貝葉硃砂寫佛語，虔敬恭謹，勉勵老友，或許亦是自我心境的寫照。
