There are twenty-three recorded versions of this subject painted by Haydon. As an admirer of Napoleon, the artist not only produced this large number of works, but also bought the emperor's death mask and was proud to have tried on one of his hats, which is said to have fitted perfectly.
The catalogue description should read 'Benjamin Robert Haydon (Plymouth 1786-1846 London)' and not Circle of Benjamin Robert Haydon (Plymouth 1786-1846 London) as in the printed catalogue. The catalogue description on the website is correct.
