Twinight Collection, no. 2066 (label to underside)
The 'vues diverses' service was started in 1812 upon the order of Napoleon, interrupted during the fall of the Empire and then finished in 1817 after the restoration of the monarchy. It contained overall 48 plates, 36 of which were delivered to King Louis XVIII at the end of 1815. See Camille Leprince, Napoléon Ier & la Manufacture de Sèvres (2016), no. 198 and p. 242.
The present lot depicts a scene in the plain of Roncevaux. Roncevaux was the location of a famous battle in 778, where a large group of Basques ambushed a part of Charlemagne's army after his conquest of the Iberian peninsula.
