Footnotes

In the late 1880's Reed proposed a novel means of temperature compensation for clock pendulums. The several forms of these devices consisted of an attachment to the pendulum bob consisting of a bimetallic ring with timing screws modeled on a chronometer balance. The various configurations were covered by patents 409705, 415735 and 436941 granted in 1889 and 1890. In the present example, the cylinder and inner ring serve as the pendulum bob. The slightly offset outer ring is the bimetallic ring with adjustable timing screws.
