Like many other dreamers, Walker Evans went to Paris in 1926 aiming to write but, the following year, made a dazzling series of shadow self portraits instead. Back in New York, Evans continued to document himself with large and small cameras, occasionally also incorporating props such as false mustaches and hats. In the summer of 1929, Evans decamped to his father's estate in Darien, Connecticut, where he produced more of these "proto-selfies", including this rare, pensive gem.
