Close friend to Gillian Ayres, Angela Carter (1940–1992) similarly, was one of the boldest and most original authors of the 20th Century. As a second-wave feminist, her work provoked lateral thought in her readers, with its themes centred explicitly around the motif of women's reclamation of their agency, power and place within the wider narrative. Furthermore, her mystical-realist style marked her apart from her contemporaries, allowing her to forge a different path, some may say before her time. Through her writings, Carter continues to be one of Britain's leading voices in the pursuit of female empowerment and gender equality in the arts.
