'He was everything to me, the only person to whom I never needed to lie, because he never expected me to be anything different to what I was'.
(Dora Carrington on Lytton Strachey)
The male figure in the present work has always been understood to be Lytton Strachey himself. The figure bearing visual resemblance to Strachey appears jaunty however, which by all accounts Strachey was not. Carrington executed a number of 'tinsel' paintings, in which she drew the scene directly onto glass and backed the work with a collage of fantastically coloured and meticulously placed sweet wrappers. These were often gifts for friends and acquaintances, in this instance presumably to Strachey, perhaps with a note of jest.
The present work has been requested for inclusion in the forthcoming Carrington exhibition to be held at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, scheduled for late 2022 to early 2023.
