London, The Leicester Galleries, Orovida Pissarro, February 1965, cat.no.36
Orovida Pissarro came from distinguished artistic stock, being the only child of Lucien Pissarro who had settled in Britain in 1890 and the granddaughter of famed Impressionist Camille Pissarro. Orovida's extended relatives were also artists, but she was the first female professional in the family and earnt a reputation as a skilled painter and etcher throughout her career. By the time the present work was painted in 1959, Orovida was concerned with painting contemporary subjects from everyday life in a naturalistic style and was known to spend much time at London Zoo observing the animals.
