Mary Potter studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Art where she won a number of prizes and was later associated with the Seven and Five Group, the London Group and the New English Art Club. She was known for using a restrained palette and by mixing paint with beeswax achieved the chalky luminescence for which her work is admired. In 1951 she moved to Aldeburgh in Suffolk and her aesthetic became increasingly abstract. However, she gained increasing recognition through the 1960s and 70s with Kenneth Clark describing her work as 'enchanting moments of heightened perception'. Potter was awarded an O.B.E. in 1979 and major retrospectives were held at Tate Gallery in 1980 and the Serpentine Gallery the following year, to great critical and public acclaim.
