A very rare Venetian or façon de Venise latticinio small vase, last third 16th century

Footnotes

Provenance
Paul Gresswell-Wilkins Collection

Small latticinio vessels made from a single parison of glass such as this are incredibly rare. The closest parallel to the present example would appear to be a small vase with a shaped foot in the Musée Ariana in Geneva (inv. no.AR 12214), illustrated and discussed by Erwin Baumgartner, Reflets de Venise (2015), pp.140-1, no.51. See also the shaped latticinio vase applied with lion masks and prunts with illustrated by Baumgartner (2015), pp.138-9, no.50 which has virtually identical vetro a fili and a retorti decoration. All have very faint red tooling marks to the base of their necks, suggesting that they are of closely related manufacture.
