A fine Dutch façon de Venise wine flute, 17th century

The exceptionally tall tapering conical bowl set on a wide merese, raised above a hollow baluster stem set between two small collars, over a short plain lower section and flattened basal knop, the wide conical foot neatly folded at the rim, 37.5cm high

There are many comparable examples of this form, some of which are decorated with diamond-point engraving. Still life paintings from the 17th century show similar flutes filled with wine. Similar flutes are illustrated by Pieter van Eck and Henrica Zijlstra-Zweens, Glass in the Rijksmuseum, vol.1 (1993), pp.42-5, nos.43-9 and by Hubert Vreeken, Glas in Het Amsterdams Historisch Museum (1998), p.135, nos.102-3.
