Footnotes

Provenance:
Ex-Lot 419, Sotheby's London, 20th September 1988.
Ex-Lot 533, Out of the Ordinary, Christie's London, 14th September 2016.

The cravat was originally won in a competition held by Picture Show and Film Pictorial magazine, in which every week an item worn by a British or American film star was awarded to the winner. On the reverse of the letter is a drafted response to Charlie Chaplin, thanking him for donating his cravat to the competition, and noting that 'life today needs the humour you alone can bring to it'.
