A large Cologne/Frechen stoneware pewter-mounted jug (Bartmannskrug), late 16th century

Of ovoid bulbous shape, the salt-glazed surface with a large bearded man over a double concentric band of three circular medallion portraits alternated with stiff acanthus leaves enclosing a running text, repeated three times in full and one time in part: DRINC.UND.EST.GODES.NICT.VERGEST [Trinkt und isst, Gott nicht vergisst / drink and eat without forgetting God], the strap-handle over another single circular medallion, mounted with a contemporaneous domed pewter cover with hinged thumbpiece, 35cm. high, the pewter marked in the centre of the inside of the cover
