A late 19th century gilt brass repeating carriage clock with pietra dura panels

Retailed by H. Bozi, Firenze
The corniche case with ribbed handle over three panels of inlaid semi-precious stones depicting floral bouquets, the signed rectangular pietra dura dial with inlaid floral spandrels, gilt Roman numerals and subsidiary alarm dial, the movement with silvered lever platform escapement and compensated bimetallic balance, striking the hour and half hour, and repeating the hour on a gong, with separate alarm train.

4 ¾ in (12cm) high including handle

Footnotes

Provenance: The collection of Dr Eugene Antelis.

Pietra dura has been a Florentine craft since the Renaissance, and it is probable that Bozi bought the clock movements from France and fitted the panels at his workshop in Florence. Other stone workers would have undoubtedly done the same, similar examples are shown in Roberts, D. (1993) Carriage and Other Travelling Clocks. Pennsylvania: Schiffer Publishing, pp.155-156.
