A good late 19th century French engraved brass oval grande sonnerie-striking carriage clock with alarm, calendar and day of the week in the original travelling case

The five glass case surmounted by a foliate handle on a raised and engraved base with a lever underneath offering options for 'hours and quarters', 'quarters' and 'silent', the circular white enamel Roman dial with blued steel Breguet style hands over three subsidiary dials, one for the day of the week, one for the alarm, the other for the date, all set within a highly engraved floral and foliate mask, the twin barrel movement with silvered lever platform escapement with compensated bimetallic balance, striking the hours, half hours and quarters on a pair of blued-steel gongs mounted on a block (stamped M.V) and two hammers, with a third hammer for the alarm. Striking, repeating (and ticking intermittently). Sold with the original purple velvet lined travelling case and an associated double ended winding key. 19cms (7ins) high (3)
