A rare late 17th century French brass- and pewter-inlaid tortoiseshell table clock of three week duration
Sarrabat, Paris
The case possibly from the Andre Charles Boulle workshop, surmounted by a shallow arched pediment flanked by twin pedestals and three flambe urn finials, the sides with arched glass apertures, on a moulded base and squat bun feet, the front door with inlaid running border enclosing the arched brass bezel, the 8.5 inch gilt brass chapter ring with every minute engraved around the edge enclosing the Roman numerals, arrow-head half hour marks and quarter hour track, with fine pierced and engraved gilt hands reading against a faded velvet ground, the large rectangular movement united by five knopped and turned pillars pinned to the backplate, each train of wheels driven by large barrels, the going with verge escapement and short bob pendulum suspended between cycloidal cheeks, the strike train with solid outside countwheel engraved with each hour striking the hours and half-hours on the bell mounted above. Ticking. Door key and winding key. 53cms (1ft 9ins) high.

Charles Sarrabat, Maître Horloger retired in 1678. He was Marchand-Horloger Privilégié du Roi suivant la Cour. A clock by him is illustrated in Plomp 'Early French Pendulum Clocks, 1658-1700, figures 72 and 73. Sarrabat was brother-in-law to Isaac Thuret.
