Footnotes

The present lot includes rare Russian Orthodox iconography of Theotokos revered. The Tolg icon belongs to the iconographic type of Eleus and is revered as the patroness of the Yaroslavl land. The church tradition connects a story with the icons appearance. Three lists from the late 13th and early 14th centuries mention this iconography. They mention that Bishop of Rostov and Yaroslav, Phkhor, saw the image on the banks of the Volga Six Versts in 1314. The wooden church was erected on the spot the next day after the miraculous sighting.
