Provenance
The commemorative silver and niello salt cellar was acquired from the Winter Palace Shop, London, c. 1970-1980s
The collection of a descendant of the Russian writer and publisher, Faddei Bulgarin (1789-1859)

The silver and niello salt cellar engraved 'Reval' and 'H.M.Y. Victoria & Albert. June 1908', commemorates the meeting between King Edward VII and Nicholas II, Emperor of Russia held in the Reval Bay, 15 - 15 June 1908. This notable meeting became the first official visit of an English monarch to Russian waters in the aftermath of the 1907 Anglo-Russian diplomatic agreements. The visit, followed by Nicholas II formal trip to Great Britain in 1909, was publicly recognized in Europe and Russia as an event of paramount significance marking the course towards political rapprochement after almost a century-long period of diplomatic tensions between the empires.

The present piece was acquired from the famous Winter Palace Shop at Kensington Church Street. Established by an American art dealer Nicholas Lynn and a former Russian aristocrat, trader and author Margot Tracey, the antiques shop specialized in trading Russian historic artworks, alike the Paris-based À la Vielle Cité and Popoff & Co. Maintaining close ties with the families of impoverished Russian aristocrats, the gallery offered an outstanding selection of Russian fine art, decorative objects and Imperial porcelain with exceptional provenance which sought interest from international collectors with an appreciation of Russian art.
