An English Hunting Hanger, And A 1751 Pattern Brass-Hilted Militia Hanger
The First Late 17th Century, The Second Early 19th Century

The first with curved fullered blade double-edged towards the point and etched with two lions in a landscape along each side of the forte, hilt comprising iron guard with scallop-shell side-guard, lobed faceted rear quillon, knuckle-guard with double central feature en suite and hooked into the pommel-cap, the latter (minor damage) encircled by alternate embossed and chased birds and figures each playing a horn, tang button centred on Bacchus masks, and natural staghorn grip (iron parts with some pitting); the second with curved blade (rust patination) fullered along the back on each side, the forte on one side stamped with contractor's name 'T. Craven' above a crowned 'D' mark and with Board of Ordnance broad arrow mark at the guard, heart-shaped guard engraved '2/26' and 'M - Huntingdon', two side-bars swept-up to join the knuckle-guard, globular pommel with button, and writhen grip (2)
