Baxter suggests that the VK mark is possibly that of Valentin Klett. Støckel lists a father and son of this name, working 1580-1603 and 1603-22 respectively. The Klett family have been described as one of the most important gun making families of Central Europe. They are first recorded in 16th Century in Suhl, moving to Salzburg-Ebenau around 1634. During the course of the 17th Century they made a number of technically ingenious firearms

For another German wheel-lock superimposed load pistol, dated 1600 and with the same mark on the lock, see Sotheby's London, The Visser Collection..., Part I, 3 July 1990, lot 131
