An Indian Sabre With Enamelled Hilt
19th Century, The Hilt Lucknow

With bright curved blade double-edged towards the point and with three fullers along the back over each side, the forte on both sides crudely cut with a crescent-shaped mark, hilt comprising gilt pinched-in basal mount pricked with foliage, swelling silver grip chased and polychrome enamelled with flowering foliage inhabited by a pair of birds on each side within blue enamelled borders, and pommel formed as a dotted makara-head against a green enamel ground with glass eyes, its ears and mouth enamelled ochre, in original wooden scabbard (velvet covering perished) with gilt-copper locket and chape decorated en suite with the basal mount, the former with belt-hook on the inside, and retaining nearly all its original gilding
