This suite was purchased by the owner's husband from Zolotas in 1972. The design is taken from ancient gold jewellery found at Mycenae.
Efthimios Zolotas established his business in 1895 with the ambition of fusing Greek traditions with Parisian craftsmanship. He achieved instant success. By the time of his marriage in 1904 and the birth of his son, Xenofon, the following year, his work was attracting an increasingly wealthy clientele amongst the Greek beau monde and in 1910, Zolotas created a series of jewels for the Greek Royal family to wear to the coronation of George V.
Xenofon Zolotas followed a different path, working for the University of Thessaloniki and the Bank of Greece, even serving briefly as Prime Minister, while maintaining an active interest in the family business. Under his leadership, Zolotas worked closely with Greek archaeological museums and produced jewellery of ancient inspiration from the early 1960s.
