Footnotes

First edition of The Great Mirror of Folly. "Of the volume's significance in economic literature there can be no doubt.... In neither [England nor France] did there appear such a stout and extravagant piece as this Dutch volume. Constituted of folio size, its bulk is made up largely of satirical plates.... No two specimens, even of approximately the same actual issue date, are exactly the same" (Cole, The Great Mirror of Folly... an Economic-Bibliographical Study, 1949). Prints include portrait of John and Mrs Law, broadsides featuring images and poems, 'Missisippi of 't wydbefaamde Goudland' ('Mississippi, or the world-famous Goldland'), a fanciful map of Louisiana, and 3 sheets of playing cards.
