Lynda Benglis has frequently used unconventional materials in her sculptural practice, from poured latex in the 1960s, to cast glass and beeswax, resin and gold leaf. In the late 1980s she began a series of metallic sculptures that resembled fans, flowers and drapery entitled Racers. Benglis collaborated with famed Southern California fabricator Jack Brogan to create a metal-spraying process for the Racer series. Brogan works with many of the artists of the Light and Space movement, such as Larry Bell, De Wain Valentine and Helen Pashigan. Although these sculptures appear to be cast, they are created by using a hot spray gun. This gives the artist the ability to spray bronze onto folded and tied stainless steel screens, creating the effect of movement within these biomorphic forms.
One of the most significant voices in Contemporary American art today, Benglis' works can be found in numerous collections around the world including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tate Modern, London; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
