Calligraphy in Clerical Script
A set of four hanging scrolls, ink on paper, the fourth scroll signed Qu Yuan Yu Yue, with two artist's seals Yu Yue chang shou and Qu Yuan Jushi, with a third artist's seal on the first panel Xian xing tian yu xiezuo jujia.
51 3/4 x 12 3/8in (131.3 x 31.5cm), each scroll (4).

A top scholar official of his day, Yu Yue passed the highest level of the Imperial examinations when was only 29 years old. In 1865 he was invited by Li Hongzhang to be director of the Ziyang Academy in Suzhou. A dedicated antiquarian and scholar of early scripts, Yu Yue was well-known for his Clerical script inspired by Han dynasty models. It is said he even relied on the script for his personal correspondences.

晚清著名書法家、教育家俞樾天資高穎,於道光三十年(1850)考中進士,時年二十九歲,曾任河南學政。罷官後移居蘇州,在紫陽書院講學。俞樾书法工篆隶,對漢隸研究尤精,書風自成一家。
