Picasso's burgeoning relationship with the seventeen-year-old Marie-Thérèse inspired a new vigour in the forty-six-year-old artist. In his studio at Boisgeloup near Paris, he produced sculpted heads of Marie-Thérèse which then appeared in the Vollard Suite etchings. Picasso cast himself in the leading role of sculptor with Marie-Thérèse as the model. His interest in Classical Antiquity influenced his decision to depict sculpture as his ideal medium, rather than painting, as the ancient Greeks had considered this to be the most elevated art form.

In Marie-Thérèse regardant son corps sculpté the model views a sculpture of herself. This double portrait serves as homage to his muse and at the same time, promotes his prowess in two art forms.
