Rembrandt was one of the old masters most revered by Picasso. Both artists were technically skilled in painting and printmaking, highly imaginative and keen to experiment and Picasso regarded himself as continuing the master's great printmaking tradition. The Vollard Suite contains four etchings dedicated to Rembrandt.

The composition of Rembrandt et Deux Femmes is quite unusual, with two models awaiting the artist and the face of Rembrandt appearing in the upper right corner, almost an apparition. It is a device which Rembrandt himself employed to create interest and mystery and to provoke debate. For example Faust in his study has a disc of light appearing before the scholar at a window and the image leaves much room for interpretation. Rembrandt et Deux Femmes has a similar ambiguity. Picasso is perhaps letting the viewer decide whether this is a voyeur, or a picture of the artist to provide inspiration, or if Picasso has stepped aside so that appropriate homage is paid to Rembrandt.
