Footnotes

Purchased
Sotheby's, 11th December 2019, Spetchley - Property from the Berkeley Collection, lot 112.

Provenance
Formerly housed at Spetchley Park, Worcester, home of the Berkeley family for over 400 years.
In 1893, the offered lot was recorded as 'a mahogany portfolio cabinet' (located at that time in the Inner Hall) as part of an inventory undertaken at Spetchley.
In the 20th century the present cabinet was documented as 'a mahogany portfolio cabinet, fitted two glazed doors, 3'6" wide' (then located in the Front Hall) as part of another Spetchley inventory undertaken in 1949.

Two virtually identical folio cabinets to the present model both sold at Sotheby's. The one which is stamped: 'Gillows' sold in London, 17 June 1983, lot 130 whilst the other unstamped example was originally purchased in London, 8 March 1985, lot 201 by A. Alfred Taubman, and was then subsequently sold by the latter through Sotheby's, New York, 13 & 14 April 2016, lot 316.

A total of four designs for closely related 'pedestal portfolio stands' (as they were described by Gillows) feature in the Estimate Sketch Books during the 1830s, No.'s 5073, 5106, 5109 and 5148, City of Westminster Archive.
