The original 70004 locomotive was built at Crewe in March 1951 and was delivered in special finish for static display at the Festival of Britain at South Bank from May to September 1951. This locomotive was notorious for snapping its connecting rod at speed while hauling the Golden Arrow Pullman train in Kent, which was found to have been caused by method of fitting the roller bearings to the axles. It was withdrawn from service in 1967. Out of a class of 55 built only two survived. No. 70000 is privately preserved and 70013 is preserved as part of the National Railway Museum.
Provenance:
Felix Leeman Collection of Lugano, Switzerland.
