Field Marshal Montgomery: a silver freedom casket

James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield 1949
Rectangular, with applied enamel plaques of Bolton buildings, Montgomery's coat-of-arms, surmounted by the arms of Bolton, engraved with a presentation inscription and five local regiments, on an ebonised wood plinth, contained in a box painted 'Bolton Lads Club', also with original illuminated freedom scroll, length of casket 32cm, weight total (excluding plinth) 70.5oz.

Footnotes

On 5th November 1949 Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, visited Bolton to receive the freedom of the city. As well as the presentation ceremony itself he also attended a Bolton Wanderers' football match and visited Bolton Lads' Club. It seems likely, not having a suitable container for his freedom casket, that the Club offered him the crude wooden box that accompanies this lot.
